[edit] Use of filters in drum and bass

The most common use of a filter, besides in the synthesis of the sounds which will be arranged to become your new track, will be to provide **filter sweeps** in your tune. Filter sweeps are used to increase attention to a loop, break or whichever layer/part you choose to affect, and can be used to signify a change is about to take place. Depending on the particular sweep, it will have a different effect on the listener. A good example is a low -> high sweep of the cutoff on a high pass filter, which starts off having little to no effect on the sound, and slowly cuts away the bass, then the midrange, until there is just the high frequency remnants of the sound left over. This usually creates a sort of suspense in the track, as an important noise has disappeared, and the listener expects to hear something else enter the track to take its place.

Filters can also be used as a sort of EQ. The advantage being that you really eliminate all the frequencies above or below a certain point. Leaving more headroom availible for other instruments than might be availible through using EQ alone.
